The British Horse Society, a charity formed in 1947, works for the good of all horses and riders. It has achieved a worldwide reputation for its work, promoting the highest standards of welfare, training and safety.
Through its structure of Development Officers and Regional and County Committees, it continues to lead across a range of activities, including extending access and rights of way.
Recent high-profile projects include establishing a fighting fund to finance legal battles over access, helping to raise more than £130,000 to combat the terrible equine disease Strangles, and working with the Rainbow Trust to give terminally ill children and their brothers and sisters the chance to ride.
As well as lobbying the Government on equine issues, every day the BHS receives calls from people throughout the UK who ask for help and advice on a huge range of horse-related subjects. The BHS Welfare department alone handles more than 30,000 enquiries a year and sends out many thousands of free leaflets on request.
The British Riding Clubs movement is also part of The British Horse Society. There are more than 440 affiliated British Riding Clubs throughout the UK, from the Orkneys to the Channel Islands. The clubs offer something for all riders, from grassroots to international.
