It started more than 100 years ago when everything depended on either the horse or steam. In 1885 there were over 60,000 working horses in Greater London, all were suffering from the pollution, with the hard roads and most were over worked, ill treated and neglected. It is from this that the London Cart Horse Parade was started to encourage better use and management of the horses doing the heaviest work (about 20,000 animals). This was followed in 1904 by the London Van Horse Parade which catered for the smaller, faster toilers.
The modern show is an amalgamation of both shows and is still a major free show in Londons calendar with up to 300 vehicles, horses and on a good day 20,000 spectators!
In this book the author Keith Chivers takes you on a tour of this magnificent parade, with black and white photographs and paintings throughout this is a great read.
